Which Press Card is Best for Freelancers?

If you’re an independent freelance photographer or journalist covering news events, you know how important it is to build your portfolio, establish credibility, and get to events before they become history. To do that, you need the right tools—including the right press card.

What is a press card, and do you really need one as a freelance photographer? Which press card is best? This article answers those questions so you can make an informed choice for your photography career.

What Are the Benefits of a Press Card?
If you photograph live events—entertainment, sports, or news—you may want one of the press cards available to IFPO members. But not all credentials are the same. “Press pass,” “journalism pass,” and “press card” are not interchangeable.

A press card often “opens more doors,” is recognized internationally (though not government-issued in the U.S.), and serves as a professional ID with your name, photo, role, and media affiliation. Most importantly, it can be verified by the issuing media outlet. By contrast, press passes are event-specific permissions granted by the event’s media office. Media outlets then provide publishing or broadcast opportunities.

All IFPO press cards are issued for three years and supported by the editorial staff of Today’s Photographer International (TPI) magazine.

Which Press Card is Really Best?

Your ideal press card depends on your goals:

International Interest
If you dream of being paid to travel, experience new cultures, and explore the world, start building that into your freelance career now—with press credentials that support international opportunities.

Commitment to Your Career
How committed are you to advancing professionally? Whether you choose an IFPO Lifetime Membership or an internationally recognized press pass, both options provide a level of global credibility. Many press professionals even report receiving preferential treatment while traveling.
